The Smithsonian's Ocean Explorer camp got to watch a loggerhead sea turtle release through Inwater Research Group yesterday! What a great experience! This turtle was drawn in through an intake pipe at the St. Lucie Power Plant, and Inwater rescued the turtle and successfully sent it back to the ocean! #seaturtlerelease | Smithsonian Marine Station and Ecosystems Exhibit

Paddles went back home for the holidays!🎁 Our friends at Inwater Research Group found Paddles in August struggling after a boat strike. After a few months of bone plates for stabilization, antibiotics, and healing, Paddles was released back to the ocean! Thank you, Pacsafe, for sponsoring Paddles's care at our Center. We are so grateful for your support! #seaturtlerelease #boatstrike #seaturtle #loggerheadseaturtle #junobeachfl #loggerheadmarinelifecenter | Loggerhead Marinelife Center

We were fortunate to join our colleagues at Inwater Research Group for a day on the water for their 2025 research trip this month near Big Pine Key, FL! The team at Inwater Research Group is amazing and had a successful project in the Keys. They captured and tagged 18 loggerheads and 1 green sea turtle. They also deployed SIX satellite tags on adult male loggerheads. This IRG study site is home to a unique, high-density foraging ground for adult male loggerheads. By tracking these animals, they

Nesting update! 🐢 We are over halfway through the 2024 nesting season! Let’s take a look at our nesting numbers so far. Loggerheads: 3,334 nests (4,262 in 2023) Greens: 58 nests (501 in 2023) Leatherbacks: 92 nests (93 in 2023) Sea turtle nesting has definitely slowed down compared to last season. But don’t worry, that’s totally normal! Each female turtle nests every 2-3 years, which causes natural high and low fluctuations over time. We’ve also had a LOT of hatchouts recently. Our loggerhead a

Why is it important to keep the beaches flat during sea turtle nesting season? While most people (and their pets) think it is fun to dig holes in the sand, it becomes dangerous to sea turtles. Holes that are left unfilled can trap nesting adults or hatchlings navigating back to the water. Even large footprints and sandcastles can become a huge obstacle for sea turtle hatchlings like the one in this video. This loggerhead sea turtle hatchling was making its way to the water when it stumbled into

Have you ever seen a turtle lay her eggs? 🐢 Our summer Turtle Walk program is now LIVE! Join us this summer for the chance to experience a loggerhead sea turtle’s egg-laying process while learning all about sea turtle conservation. Participants will enjoy an informative talk about sea turtles, while our trained biologists scout the beach for a nesting female. Turtle Walks are a fun learning experience and a great opportunity to witness nature at its most primitive. We do not recommend performin

Last week, our biologists encountered an adult female loggerhead. This big girl weighed in at 133.5 kg, which is about 294 pounds! While performing a scientific work-up on this turtle, we found that she had been previously tagged, but no longer had her flipper tags. This is quite common for turtles that have been recaptured throughout the years. While we often recapture turtles that were originally caught by our group, occasionally we encounter sea turtles that have been tagged by other organiza

Nesting update! 🐢 It's been a busy summer on South Hutchinson Island. So far this season, we have 3,592 loggerhead nests (lower than 2024), 519 green nests (higher than 2024), and 180 leatherback nests (all-time record). These trends reflect the nesting data that we've seen fluctuate over the last few years. Sea turtles typically nest every 2-3 years, creating periods of really high or really low nesting with some years in between. Overall, all three species have been successful in our area. St

Watch as this beautiful turtle takes off towards the sunrise over the ocean! Green sea turtles are the largest hard-shelled sea turtles weighing around 300-350 lbs. Female green turtles migrate to nesting beaches every other year. A nesting female will lay an average of four nests per season with about 135 eggs each. That’s roughly 540 eggs per turtle! This mama was busy finishing up her nest, which took her into the early morning. Our biologists were lucky enough to witness her return to sea. W

We’ve been quite busy at IRG! 🎉 Here are some of our most recent encounters. 🐢 This winter, we’ve worked with several juvenile and subadult green sea turtles at our St. Lucie Site. These turtles live just along the coast at a nearby reef where they find food and refuge. After a quick workup with tags and measurements, the turtles are released right back into the ocean. Got a surprise visit from a momma loggerhead this morning 🌞🐢 This turtle was out on the beach looking for a place to lay her eggs. While loggerhead sea turtles typically nest at night, it's not uncommon to see one "running a little behind". Did you spot her tears? Sea turtles excrete excess salt from glands behind their eyes, which makes it look like they are crying. Don't worry, she's not sad, she's just salty! #inwaterresearch #seaturtle #nestingseason #loggerhead #conservation | Inwater Res

Hatchlings are still emerging on Hutchinson Island South! While females are pretty much done laying eggs, we still have nests that are waiting to hatch. Sea turtle nests typically incubate for 45-60 days before hatchlings emerge at the surface. Some of our nests won’t be ready until the beginning of October! So, remember to keep the beaches clean, dark, and flat until October 31st. This will allow sea turtle hatchlings and any late-season nesters to safely navigate the beach and return to the wa

“Ugh, Monday.” – This loggerhead mama was running a little behind this morning and came out to nest during our survey! We were lucky enough to see her lay her eggs and safely head back to the water. Sea turtles typically lay their eggs at night to avoid high temperatures and predation. However, some turtles miss the memo and nest either before dusk or after dawn. Fortunately, it doesn’t appear to influence the overall success of the nest. Check out the egg drop. 🐢 Happy Memorial Day! #inwaterre

Turtle Release 🎉 Our team recently captured this female loggerhead sea turtle! We completed a turtle workup with measurements, tags, and an overall health assessment. This turtle measured 91.5 cm (36 in.) in length and weighed 112.6 kg (248 lbs.). She is what we call “robust”, which is a good sign that she is a productive female here for nesting season! This turtle was also a “new recruit” that hadn’t been tagged by anyone else. Before returning to the ocean, she received two external flipper t

A hatchling taking its first steps—a heart-breaking reminder of the daily struggles our wildlife endures. Today, millions of tons of waste pollute our oceans and our beaches, negatively impacting our animals and their environment. Affecting all life stages, marine debris can harm or even kill our wildlife by means of ingestion, entanglement, or entrapment. The truth is it’s up to us. Together we can protect our planet by minimizing our waste, switching to reusable items, cleaning up our ecosyste

If the weekend wasn't enough to get excited about, check this out! A very rare occurrence was captured on film this Wednesday as an IRG biologist stumbled upon a loggerhead nest that was hatching on our very own survey site. Watch as these little loggerheads persevere and make their way out of their nest, essentially using falling sand and their brothers and sisters as a ladder out. In this nest, you'll find roughly 100 eggs, most of which have been "pipped" open by the tiny caruncle (or egg too

Turtle Release 🐢 Watch these juvenile green sea turtles take off after a quick turtle workup complete with tags, measurements, and a health assessment. This research project was conducted pursuant to NMFS ESA Permit No. 21169 and FWC MTP 204. *Note: Turtles are marked with animal-safe paint so that they are not recaptured during a research project. This temporary marking does not affect the turtle and wears off within a few days. #inwaterresearch #seaturtles #turtlerelease #conservation #marine

Baby sea turtles hatching 😍 Did you know that when sea turtles emerge from the nest it’s called a boil? This happens because a bunch of hatchlings come out of the nest super quickly, which makes the sand look like it’s boiling! Sea turtle hatchlings are prompted by lower temperatures, typically at nighttime, or in this case early morning. The group of turtles will begin thrashing which moves the sand beneath them and elevates them towards the surface. The sand starts to “boil” and hatchlings em

It’s Turtle Tuesday! Check out this green sea turtle making its way back to the ocean. Did you know that green sea turtles are the second largest marine turtle? Weighing up to 400 pounds, greens are the next largest after the leatherback sea turtle. Their carapace, or hard upper shell, can grow up to five feet long. Green sea turtles also have large paddle-like flippers and a nonretractable head that is proportionately small compared to their overall size. Green sea turtles can be found in tropi
